Looking for a good book to read? I’m sharing 10 must-read books to add to your reading list. Books to inspire, encourage, and keep you up way past your bedtime.
1. OPENING BELLE | Maureen Sherry: Opening Belle is a smart, biting and honest peek into what it means to be a woman on Wall Street. Reese Witherspoon’s company, Pacific Standard Films will be making it into a movie.
2. ROOTS AND SKY: A JOURNEY HOME IN FOUR SEASONS | Christie Purifoy: Roots and Sky is a memoir about the author’s first year living in an old Pennsylvania farmhouse. The book weaves through each of the four seasons, bringing the lessons learned in each one. The story serves as a good reminder to enjoy the present and appreciate the little things in life. Christie’s writing is beautiful. You can read more of Christie’s writing on her blog, ChristiePurifoy.com.
3. OUT OF THE HOUSE OF BREAD | Preston Yancey: This devotional is about learning to walk with Jesus through the practice of the spiritual disciplines not in the church, but in the kitchen. Each chapter pairs a spiritual discipline or practice with insight to the baking of an extraordinary loaf of bread. An appendix, about gluten-free and vegan bread and the spirituality involved, will close off the book. If you enjoy baking, this is one to add to your reading list.
4. ORIGINALS: HOW NON-CONFORMISTS MOVE THE WORLD | Adam Grant: It profiles successful people across many fields with a common thread among them being how non-conformist they are. Check out Adam’s article how teachers and parents can identify and cultivate children who think creatively and unconventionally HERE. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
5. THE FEATHERED BONE | Julie Cantrell: The book calls attention to the issue of human trafficking in Louisiana. The author also tackles domestic abuse, grief, suicide, natural disaster, and divorce. The story starts in pre-Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, where a class field trip ends tragically after one of the 12-year old girls goes missing. The story is difficult to read at times, but the ending is very uplifting.
6. THE LIFE-GIVING HOME: CREATING A PLACE OF BELONGING AND BECOMING | Sally and Sarah Clarkson: A mother and daughter talk about what makes a house a home and how influential the home atmosphere is to your children. You’ll pick up a vision of making your home a life-giving haven for those who live there and for those who enter its doors.
7. MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN: Christy Beam: Miracles From Heaven is the story of a young girl suffering from a rare digestive disorder who finds herself miraculously cured after surviving a terrible accident. Jennifer Garner stars as Christy Beam in the major motion picture opening March 16 nationwide.
8. ALONG THE INFINITE SEA | Beatriz Williams: Indomitable heroines, a dazzling world of secrets, champagne at the Paris Ritz, and a sweeping love story for the ages, in New York Times bestselling author Beatriz William’s book about the Schuyler sisters.
Each of the three Schuyler sisters has her own world-class problems, but in the autumn of 1966, Pepper Schuyler’s problems are in a class of their own. When Pepper fixes up a beautiful and rare vintage Mercedes and sells it at auction, she thinks she’s finally found a way to take care of herself and the baby she carries. But the car’s new owner turns out to have secrets of her own, and as the glamorous and mysterious Annabelle Dommerich takes pregnant Pepper under her wing, the startling provenance of this car comes to light: a Nazi husband, a Jewish lover, a flight from Europe, and a love so profound it transcends decades. As the many threads of Annabelle’s life from World War II stretch out to entangle Pepper in 1960s America, and the father of her unborn baby tracks her down to a remote town in coastal Georgia, the two women must come together to face down the shadows of their complicated pasts.
9. RAISING GRATEFUL KIDS IN AN ENTITLED WORLD | Kristen Welch: Read this book if you want to be inspired and encouraged to live differently and raise a family centered around gratitude rather than entitlement. It’s conversational and practical, easy to apply bits at a time, not overwhelming.
10. THE EX | Alafair Burke: If you’re in the mood for suspense, strange relationships, and unreliable narration you should check out this book.
